Scrapstore logo and charity number Volunteer Page -

Why don't you come and join us?..

The Scrapstore is almost entirely run by volunteers, loosely coordinated by John Marsh, - (who actually gets some remuneration for his long hours!).  Click here for current opportunities

There is a very happy atmosphere in the store and putting in an appearance is like going to a social event. Do come and visit, or better still come and do some work as a volunteer.

When you come you may meet some of the following happy people;--

Picture of Geoff, our Chairman Geoff Chairman

Geoff is seldom seen during opening hours, but is very busy behind the scenes coping with things like Management Meetings and grant applications.

He can sometimes be seen at weekends helping with our public workshops and is starting to spend more time getting his hands dirty (with clean scrap!), now that he has retired.

Geoff is overseeing the Community Builders project

Picture of John, our Coordinator. John Coordinator

John is the engine behind the Scrapstore, he does most of the collection of scrap from our donor companies in the large green van.

He also does all the buying and stocking for our Arts & Crafts Shop, and he is usually about in the store during our opening hours.

He also has to organise the movement of scrap between our three backup stores at Eastpoint, our strategic store nearer the centre of Southampton, and the Scrapstore itself.  Like the British Museum, If you don't see something on display it doesn't mean we haven't got it.

Picture of Morley our treasurer and webmaster.

Morley

Treasurer

Morley is only seen in the store when there is money to collect. His job is to pay all the cash, cheques, credit cards and whatever into the bank, and to pay all the bills.

He largely has a free hand to operate as he pleases, but does make a token report to Management Committee meetings.  However he is really called to task annually by the Auditor, who demands that every penny is accounted for!

Morley is also the IT consultant and WebMaster, so any problems with the shop till or the website are blamed on him.

Picture of Doreen, our membership administrator.

Doreen Membership Admin

Doreen is the person who sends out renewal reminders and keeps our membership database up to date as members renew their subscriptions.

She cheerfully manages this job by popping in for a couple hours on Thursday mornings, producing an up-to-date printout of the current member statistics for John each week.

Picture of Alice, a long standing volunteer.

Alice

Stalwart Volunteer

Alice is a long standing volunteer who has been turning up to do whatever is needed at the Scrapstore, on Thursdays. She is guaranteed to find scrap in the parts of the store that others can't reach.

Alice is also a Scrapstore member in her own right, as an over-50s group leader, and is a real expert if you need ideas on what to do with scrap.

She has also been seen  running sewing workshops, using the Scrapstore  sewing machines to turn scrap material into must-have cushions.

Picture of Su, volunteer workshops expert.

Su

Su is a volunteer who has been taking on more and more responsibilities concerning the workshops that we run to demonstrate what can be done with our scrap.

These have included the away days at Goodwood and Larmer Tree, as well as robot making.

She can sometimes be seen at the store, usually collecting materials for some scheme or other, as shown here.

Picture of Vicki, volunteer and workshop artist

Vicky

Vicky is a professional artist who assists in the Scrapstore regularly, but mainly runs our more arty workshops, and organises the hire kits.

She also initiated the website and can cope with the computerised till system, so she's also technical!!

You may see her on Thursdays, if you want expert advice, or email her on

toriaforarts@aol.com

Picture of Jennie, artist and volunteer

Jennie

Previously our Membership & Marketing Officer, Jennie is now an ex-employee of the Scrapstore, but continues to be a source of inspiration for the imaginative use of scrap, particularly where it can be used to further the cause of community relations.

She will be only too pleased to tell you about the facilities we have for making carnival costumes, lanterns, horses, wacky cars and many other exciting things.

Picture of John, volunteer

John

John is a retired scientist who loves lending a hand at the Scrapstore, usually on Tuesdays.

He says he is a general gofer, or is it gopher?

He is very practical and often gets asked to fix things. So if you need material for shelves or curtains, ask John.

Picture of Adrienne, volunteer

Adrienne

Adrienne is a cheerful soul who may usually be found sorting out the Scrapstore on Mondays.

She is also branching out  to assist with workshops, and has been known to run one or two on her own!

Adrienne will give you chapter and verse on the joys of our awaydays at Goodwood and the Larmer Tree.

Picture of gwen, volunteer and occasional artist.

Gwen

Gwen is another regular helper, also on Mondays, who always seems to be sorting something out or tidying something up.

Like many other volunteers, Gwen has artistic talents and has been persuaded to run a workshop or two for us.

So if you want to build a robot or two, ask Gwen.

Picture of Carol, volunteer.

Carol

Carol has been a regular volunteer for many years, doing one Tuesday a month. Her speciality is feathers, as in tickle stick.

If you need a cheerful face to advise you how to entertain toddlers with materials from the Scrapstore, you can do no better than talk to Carol

Picture of Stephanie, volunteer.

Stephanie

Stephanie can be found behind the till at the Scrapstore on Wednesday evenings as long as the Saints are not at home.

She is very creative and will demonstrate how to make things from scrap, with very little encouragement.

Picture of Sylvia, volunteer.

Sylvia

Sylvia is often seen on Tuesdays, busily folding things, and doing whatever else is necessary at the time to keep the place neat and tidy.

Picture of Maureen, volunteer.

Maureen

Maureen is also a Tuesday person and likes to see things presented in a smart manner.

She does beautiful italic (it's not copperplate) handwriting, which is seen in abundance on the labels in the shop.

Picture of Helen, volunteer.

Helen

Helen can be found in the Scrapstore on Wednesday evenings.  She is always willing to offer suggestions on what you can do with our beautiful clean scrap.
Picture of Geraldine, volunteer.

Geraldine

Geraldine is usually busy in the Scrapstore on Mondays, helping to sort out the bulk materials into bite sized packets that you can use without too much further cutting up.

Picture of Peter, volunteer.

Peter

Peter helps in the Scrapstore around mid-day on Thursdays. He helps keep everything clean and tidy and makes a very good cup of coffee.
Picture of Jacqui, volunteer and Management Committee member Jacquie Jacquie is a member of the Management Committee  and a professional community worker. If she doesn't know the answer, she knows someone who does.

She has been making things from scrap for as long as she can remember and now runs her own community arts workshop business.

If you enquire about Scrapstore workshops, the odds are that Jacquie will help in answering your query.

Do challenge her!
